If you were born on the edge of two generations (like 1996/1997 for Millennial/Gen Z), you may identify with characteristics of both. These "cuspers" often feel they don't fully belong to either generation and may share traits from both cohorts.
Common cusp years include:
Understanding generational differences helps us:
Our generation calculator uses widely accepted birth year ranges based on research from:
While there's some variation in exact cutoff dates between sources, we use the most commonly accepted ranges that align with major historical and cultural shifts.
If you were born in 1996, you're a Millennial (Gen Y). However, 1996 is a cusp year, so you may identify with some Gen Z characteristics as well.
The key difference is that Gen Z are true digital natives who grew up with smartphones from early childhood, while Millennials remember life before widespread internet and social media. Gen Z tends to be more pragmatic and entrepreneurial, while Millennials are more idealistic and collaborative.
Generation labels are sociological tools, not precise scientific categories. They help identify broad trends and shared experiences, but individual variations always exist. Not everyone in a generation will match all stereotypical characteristics.
There's no official governing body for generations, so researchers use slightly different cutoff dates based on their methodology. Most differences are only 1-2 years at the boundaries.
If you're born on a cusp year (the boundary between two generations), you may identify with traits from both. This is completely normal and recognized by researchers as the "cusp" experience.
